In 2018 I really want to dial in my travel "set". That is, a closet/minimalist wardrobe for travelling that works for both casual/business semi-casual, is carry on only, etc

jase
2018-01-03 10:45
I figure we all have some good advice here.

These have been my go-to travel shoe for the last ~5 years. The latest model has suede, which I'm not so big on (they used to be all canvas) and, somehow I'd like to find a shoe that is just as casual but can look more suitable for business meetings/trade shows.

@jase I've been using the same shoes for a long time. Its a good combination of all purpose semi elegant shoes. Convers has this status somehow.

jase
2018-01-04 16:12
Same shoes as me @fish? Or as in you're using a pair of Converse?

jase
2018-01-04 16:12
If I can't find anything else I like I'll probably go with Cons

fish
2018-01-04 16:17
I was using the classic model but its the same idea,

fish
2018-01-04 16:18
Right now I'm using some handmade leather Vietnamese shoes that has been looking awesome and very comfortable at first but now are falling apart

jase
2018-01-04 16:18
Nice - are they passable for business meetings?

jase
2018-01-04 16:18
For a bank for example

fish
2018-01-04 16:19
Yes they were are awesome until quite recently. I am overusing them...

jase
2018-01-04 16:19
that's a good sign!

jase
2018-01-04 16:20
if you can overuse them they must be good for just about all things

fish
2018-01-04 16:20
My current choice is Sketchers. They do a very good combo of comfort and elegant look

fish
2018-01-04 16:22
I'll also add my latest addition to the traveling arsenal: http://www.tp-link.com.au/products/details/cat-9_TL-WR802N.html Using it to covert Ethernet to wifi as the new laptops no longer have the input, extending wifi range when reception is not well and share connections in airports and so on. I'm very happy with it.

jase
2018-01-04 16:23
Crazy handy, good recommendation!

fish
2018-01-04 16:28
Oh yeah also this has been a life saver on many occasions

jase
2018-01-04 16:29
This comes with my everywhere

fish
2018-01-04 16:37
Standard EU input with a small US adapter is working everywhere. Russia, Japan, China, Thailand, you name it... No need to carry this monster

jase
2018-01-04 16:42
I have those too! Actually mine is a bit smaller than the one above

jase
2018-01-04 16:42
Good shout on the Sketchers, these look pretty good for what I need: https://www.skechers.com/en-us/style/68581/bryson/blk

I?ve been eyeballing sketchers, but they are too heavy for my taste. My main concern is almost always weight of my gear. So I?m into running shoes ? they are lightweight and well cushioned.

skat
2018-01-06 16:10
I?m in love with my Nike Flex Run (2015 model). It perfectly matches for casual clothes, excersise and hikes. And i wear them as a primary shoes for almost two years

skat
2018-01-06 16:10
They already look a bit shitty now, but still holding on properly.

skat
2018-01-06 16:11
And really damn lightweight

skat
2018-01-06 16:12
I?m thinking of buying a similar pair this year. I can?t imagine any better shoe for me.

jase
2018-01-06 16:12
Do you wear them all the time though?

skat
2018-01-06 16:12
Yeah, all the time.

jase
2018-01-06 16:12
Sometimes when I'm travelling into Winter I'll wear my boots on the plane and Supras in my pack

jase
2018-01-06 16:13
Or is it that you find heavier shoes less comfortable?

skat
2018-01-06 16:14
I don?t have any heavier shoes, i have Toms that i use as slippers replacement. Didn?t had any issues wearing Nike?s during winter.

skat
2018-01-06 16:16
At my parents home I was wearing heavier shoes, but only just because I had them already. And winter was a bit extreme.

jase
2018-01-06 16:16
Yeah - winters for me are usually a foot of snow

skat
2018-01-06 16:16
But without -20 temperature ? Nike?s are good.

skat
2018-01-06 16:17
I?m mostly a sun surfer ? hardly see much of winter :slightly_smiling_face:

jase
2018-01-06 16:17
haha, that's usually my plan - this year is a bit different (got a kid coming any day now!)

skat
2018-01-06 16:23
@jase are you writing about your travelling experience? maybe sharing instagram photos? we have baby incoming as well, would be cool to lookup different destinations to travel and other stuff :slightly_smiling_face:

jase
2018-01-06 16:24
Hmm, I hadn't really thought about it. Been so busy I haven't written/posted much but usually it goes on: https://jaserodley.com https://www.instagram.com/jaserodley/

jase
2018-01-06 16:25
Congrats by the way!

skat
2018-01-06 16:26
@jase i was not thinking about this too  i?m full in on my project and taking care of my wife

skat
2018-01-06 16:27
added you on instagram!

jase
2018-01-06 16:28
It's funny - now more than ever I want a minimalist kit to bring with me when I travel

jase
2018-01-06 16:28
Because I'll be carrying someone else's gear with me too haha

skat
2018-01-06 16:29
@jase we bought a car to carry all the babies stuff (because i refuse to carry others people stuff) :slightly_smiling_face: and basically planning to have road trips during first year

jase
2018-01-06 16:32
Yeah good call - we have a car here too (Andorra - home base), but will probably head to Thailand in October

jase
2018-01-06 16:33
Maybe head to Australia in September... or wait until early 2019

jase
2018-01-06 16:33
Will definitely be less travel - probably just some short trips to Barcelona/South of France

skat
2018-01-06 16:33
@jase wooh, if you?ll be passing Chiang Mai ? give me a nudge

jase
2018-01-06 17:45
Could be a decent option for business/casual shoes

jase
2018-01-06 18:07
Liking these too - just don't know how breathable they are in Summer/warmer climates

johncitizen
2018-01-07 10:28
Canvas is normally breathable unless it?s treated.

jase
2018-01-07 11:58
Yeah they say it's "weather proof backed" and uses some wax too

skat
2018-01-07 12:24
?Vegan shoe? ? oh man, that marketing is beyond me.

jase
2018-01-07 13:19
i just can't do leather though - canvas is for sure my choice

fish
2018-01-15 05:56
I'm concerned about weight as well

skat
2018-01-15 06:29
@fish i should probably compare. currently, nike?s i?m using is the lightest footwear i?ve found.

johncitizen
2018-01-15 20:26
I usually pack a pair of salomon runners, some flip flops and a pair of canvas casual shoes. If I need to go to a meeting I'll just go buy something and goodwill it.

johncitizen
2018-01-15 20:27
Unless it's winter climate, then I'll wear some dressy boots that pass in a meeting.

Legit, my always carried/never changed travel-gear is a plastic BIC lighter. They are nuclear apocalypse indestructible and always work, even after the washer/dryer.

johncitizen
2018-05-06 09:33
I?ve been thinking about doing a post on my bags. I travel offshore a lot all over the world and have a 15kg total max weight for luggage (5kg carry on, 10kg checked). That includes my laptop and stuff.

johncitizen
2018-05-06 09:34
Been living like that for the past 7 years.

jase
2018-05-06 12:56
15kg is my general maximum nowadays too though not limited by anyone but me.

jase
2018-05-06 12:57
I spend a lot of time walking both around cities and on trails and I find 15kg is the reasonable maximum before being cumbersome

Anyone have a suggestion on a minimalist phone? I want something really stripped down but still does what I need.... calls sms email notifications (I don't need to be able to reply) calendar notifications whatsapp

jase
2019-01-19 07:23
I'm thinking a KaiOS phone might be the way to go

jase
2019-01-19 07:24
Ideally has great battery life too

maxsuur
2019-01-19 10:43

jase
2019-01-19 10:55
It's not really what I'm looking for but Unihertz Jelly Pro is interesting

jase
2019-01-19 10:55
Expensive though, short battery life and too many features for me

jase
2019-01-20 04:50
would be cool if the camera was better, but clearly I'm asking too much

johncitizen
2019-01-21 10:48
I?d want honest reviews on battery life, for travel I want a minimal phone with a 7 day standby.

jase
2019-01-21 10:58
7 days, is that a thing nowadays?

johncitizen
2019-01-22 09:27
Sure, you can get minimalist phones (not smart) that have longer standbys.

johncitizen
2019-01-22 09:29
Ahh but in today?s age you really need something that does google Authenticator, u2f, etc for doing banking and stuff on the run.

jase
2019-01-22 09:55
Yeah that's the trick. I basically want a minimalist android phone that is too annoying to use for social media/browsing

jase
2019-01-22 09:55
So it facilitates business/life but isn't enticing to use for entertainment

burrup.lambert
2019-01-22 10:05
Can you just uninstall the social media apps? Another trick I have used which I think key help you his turning monochrome, black and white, on. On my One Plus 6 its called reading mode but it can be turned on in developer settings on android.

burrup.lambert
2019-01-22 10:08
Worked for me!

jase
2019-01-22 10:29
Yeah I have done this. I guess I am just being greedy now, hoping to have a tiny phone that is easier to carry when I am running/mountain biking/otherwise not wanting to carry much.

burrup.lambert
2019-01-22 10:37
Smart watch perhaps? I don't have one personally however so can't comment, I thought you could get ones with Sim cards in them though.

maxsuur
2019-01-22 10:53
Been thinking about this for a couple of years. Finally!

jase
2019-01-22 11:25

Hey crew, just a heads up GoogleFi is now installable without the physical SIM, through E-SIM which makes it a Fantastic option worldwide for anyone to join.

buynps.org
2021-01-11 00:14
@gun still have to be USA resident?

gun
2021-01-11 00:21
You need to enter a US address, pay with a US card, and use a US VPN. If that's what you mean, yes

Was checking out Airalo and they have a global plan as well

mb
2021-01-11 10:52
As for Airalo, I've checked some options/and compared. And you have plans where data expires in 7/14/30 days. But you have also plans where data only expires after a year.

mb
2021-01-11 10:52
Which is interesting if you only need data from now and then, when you're travelling or outside without WiFi. Effectively paying 10 or 20usd and being able to use it for more than a month.

Thanks for the field report, Kevin. Which country?

taylorwalkerllc
2021-01-12 07:16
Hey I did exactly that and I was even able to activate my plan while using ExpressVPN with American IP on my iPhone. It all works, I even got the App (I had to switch my account and create a new "iCloud USA" one. But now I am still stuck as I get the service information etc. but there is no internet while using Google Fi. I guess you still need to be physically in the US to finally use Fi one time there and then be able to use it globally.

leo.kipfelsberger
2021-01-12 13:00
@gun @taylorwalkerllc Same issue. I signed up, downloaded the app and got a number with a VPN. However, for actual activation a google rep confirmed that you need to be physically in the US to get the service to work. After that you can use it to travel. Im wondering whether any other nomads ever got it to work and activate outside the US

I know there are jailbreak solutions to this, but yes, would be much better without jailbreak. Another solution is to group into family plans, and have the visiting-the-US person setup the family plan, and then you get 5 additional non-US people able to be added to the plan

gun
2021-01-20 18:46
Alternatively, you could get a friend in the US to setup the sim and then post it to you?

toby

2021-04-26 07:55
I just bought a TP-Link TL-WR802N N300 router, which lets me connect to a hotel wifi (even the ones with captive portal / login through browser) and connect my devices incl. chromecast to it. This way I am not restricted in the number of devices I can connect, and I can connect devices without an interface to deal with the login screen (like a chromecast). It can also be used with cabled internet. Best ~30EUR I ever spent on a travel hack. https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/wifi-router/tl-wr802n/

klaus
2021-04-26 07:55
Used it on a trip last week and it worked great.

felix
2021-05-01 06:10
Was looking at that and it looks super tempting: https://www.starlink.com/

felix

Would solve all the inefficiencies in developing countries in terms of internet connection but probably too big for the backpack

fish

I have one if their too, it's been useful for extending range, getting around restrictions and a workaround for problematic and overloaded routers if various establishments

Also probably airport time limited internet connections :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:

Yes, and it supports WireGuard VPN which is offered (besides others) by Mullvad VPN

Can anyone recommend a provider for ensuring against theft of expensive electronic items like laptops? My SafetyWing travel insurance doesn't cover it and most policies I've found online are either home insurance or cover something like 45 days abroad with the device and not perpetual travel

2021-08-29 18:13
@tobias.winstonlabs well, I'm thinking of just moving from safetywing to worldnomads. It's a bit more expensive but they seem to cover electronics, like laptops. Revolut also have device insurance but I couldn't work out if this cover was only mobiles or laptops too.

leehodg
2021-09-07 16:12
To update this a bit further: world nomads told me standard plan would only give upto £1000 cover for all electronics combined and max £125 per item, with a ?specified item? added it could be upto £400 for that item. Their explorer plan on the other hand goes upto £2000 for all, £250 per item, or a specified item up to £750. Quotes for mid-thirties, no health issues, yearly and wordwide cover were: Standard plan: - £496.86 for year with level 1 starting 20 Oct 2021 - £544.80 (£400 for specified item added claim) Explorer plan: - £669.60 1 year - £759.60 (specified item ?..£750)

leehodg
2021-09-07 16:13
I don?t think I?ll bother as that?s quite a lot more than my safety wing cover that does more or less all except electronics and is just £30pm?and even with specified item cover and the most expensive explorer plan of £759 per year, it would only cover £750 of the value of a laptop with £100 excess

leehodg
2021-09-09 20:14
https://secure.covercloud.co.uk/quote/select looks promising too. You need to be in the UK at the time of taking out the policy and the laptop less than a year old, but with the largest excess it?s just 15gbp per month for MBP 16 and you can be outside of the UK for unlimited days per year and autorenews after a year?.so it seems ok
