@brab prices are certainly going up real quick. What do you think is driving this rally?

brab
2016-12-21 01:53
The situations in Venezuela, India, China make it so bullish fundamentally for btc. We are at 3 year highs and there is not much resistance above, Should be able to make it to 1,000usd before Chinese new year

I think a lot of people will take profits around 1000-1050 so it should be an initial resistance, after that I can see it going higher, but I think it will return back to the 500-600 range at least sometime next year

having to invest 50,000 euros for one year (I'm in europe) and having the possibility to choose to keep them in euro, or to exchange them in UK £ or USD $ what would you do? I am not so sure that euro will survive very long as we know it now, so I would be tempted to change them in UK£ as they already suffered a -10% loss after brexit and I don't think will still go lower, while US $ is very strong now and could also lower a bit but if euro goes south both currencies will surely increase against it... any opinion is welcome

danz
2017-03-05 16:32
I believe the USD will be even stronger, if we are talking short term. The euro will go only slowly go lower this year I believe, to many problems.

princevaliant
2017-03-05 16:42
I mean in about a year as my investment would end in april 2018

scorps
2017-03-06 17:01
@princevaliant No one knows and I won't pretend i do but if i were to bet, USD may still have a year of strength remaining. Do you have to exchange all of it? You can just split 50/50 USD and UK if you really don't want to hold Euros. However, I'd stay away from making the trade if you don't have any backed up conviction.

harvie
2017-03-07 04:51
@princevaliant gold and silver are good options if you want to invest that money long-term. I try to hold as little currency as I need and buy gold/silver as I won't need that cashflow for day-to-day living.

I already have a good quantity of gold, this is a one year investment with a rather good return and can be done in Euro, usd or gbp. One year ago I would have done it in euros without thinking about it but now I am not so optimistic about it so I was thinking if it was better to change currency (but in this way there also the exchange risk that could eat up the return of the investment if these other currencies should go lower instead than higher...)

jase
2017-03-24 14:39
"Ms Le Pen said she favoured a return to the ?Ecu? ? a pre-eurozone currency regime where member states would return to their national currencies but retain the euro as a common accounting currency."

jase

philippe
2017-03-24 15:01
but I?m libertarian and she?s nationalist :stuck_out_tongue:

philippe
2017-03-25 03:26
My rationale is that if you don?t stay in a single currency area (as a nomad), keeping all your cash in the same currency forever is already a trade? So how to optimize without overoptimizing ?

jase
2017-03-25 12:47
@philippe you could choose to buy currencies that are weighted against other currencies. Take SGD as an example.

philippe
2017-03-26 03:10
What for ? :slightly_smiling_face:

jase
2017-03-26 09:04
@philippe well if you are wanting a simple plan, it may help you to hedge your bets so to speak. You're only holding one currency, rather than switching currencies all of the time losing $$ in the exchange, but that currency is directly linked to the value of other currencies.

jase
2017-03-26 09:04
I don't think you'll ever "win big" holding SGD, but I don't think you'll ever lose big either

jase
2017-03-26 09:05
But I'm sure there are much more sophisticated plans out there from much smarter people

philippe
2017-03-26 09:55
If I own only one currency I?m still losing money compared to another one. For example if I own USD or SGD while Euro appreciates and I have to spend money in the eurozone, I loose purchasing power.

2017-05-17 14:35
@johncitizen yeah, I?ve meet a company that does this new currency called Ada. They launched it 3 weeks ago in Japan. They have a cool strategy of becoming a game currency, they are already profitable, founder was working with etheriums before and they are hiring some of world best talent. I?m waiting until i can buy them on kraken or other exchanges

skat
2017-05-17 14:39
@johncitizen they are basically following footsteps of etherium in development, but doing things smarter. for programmable interface for currency they are building a derivation of haskell language, paradigm of language perfectly fits this use case, it?s functional (doesn?t store any state) and is well known as very safe language (can test code by itself). So there is a lower chance of any DAO hacks.

what kind of complains?

danz

@tatelev not really except you want to buy big. Just avoid the really small or unknown exchanges. Both coins you want to buy are very popular and are available at the big ones.

The rates on Canadian exchanges are terrible though. Don?t expect much :slightly_smiling_face:

roman
2017-06-29 12:05
For me, picking an exchange was mostly based on what kind of fiat currency can be loaded and what methods they used for that. E.g. I didn?t want to load via credit card, as they charge 3+% for that, and few supported ACH. I think that is the main factor.

soebusiness
2017-06-29 12:37
Hey guys! I've bough some coins on https://anycoindirect.eu/. Had no previous experience with them, but they seem to have quite fast support. Firs SEPA transfer proceeded the same day. There is also an option to register as a business owner, therefore you need VAT and other company details. My fault I did not ensure first, that they are not able to provide a receipt (invoice) for bookkeeping purposes. Any idea, how to file this transaction (from business bank acc.) without an invoice?

roman
2017-06-29 13:15
@soebusiness In Canada it just goes to a ?shareholder account? as a negative balance. You can cover that by doing a transfer from personal bank account to your biz bank account and attribute it to the ?shareholder account?. But if you ever write off any personal expenses on business, usually that shareholder account has some balance that is owed to you anyways.

roman
2017-06-29 13:15
Also, in Canada, it?s legal to have expenses without invoices, but you still need proof of your expenses in some way in case of audit.

roman
2017-06-29 13:16
E.g. maybe it was some kind of email exchange with one of the contractors that you promised them to pay $100 or something like that.

roman
2017-06-29 13:16
I?ve dealt with some countries that don?t know what an invoice is, and for small amounts I didn?t bother educating them on that. So I just filed it with a note explaining what it was for and some references.

roman
2017-06-29 13:17
I wouldn?t do that for large amounts though.

stolzlos
2017-07-01 10:02
I was not aware of this and I assume that most people are not but lots of the altcoins never saw a bearmarket to this date.

stolzlos
2017-07-01 10:03
Monero for example had a huge run last year and corrected severely and then broke higher again from November. Yet its main trend was never broken. Even with a 73% correction!

stolzlos
2017-07-01 10:05
with all the new coins flooding the markets and problems abound in the biggest coins (BTC, ETH, etc) there is a good chance that we see that trend break for the first time. What happens then is anybodies guess.

roman
2017-07-01 10:22
Aren't most ICOs funded by ETH?

danz
2017-07-01 10:47
Yes, they are

stolzlos
2017-07-01 10:55
and that pushed up ETH a lot further. I wonder if there could be a reverse effect as well if such coins dramatically start falling or even failing.

stolzlos
2017-07-01 10:59
I think economically speaking nobody has a clue how that will play out and if people start losing money big there could be an outright panic. It will serve as a reference for future coin based coins.

stolzlos
2017-07-01 18:48
ETH back on support. I would say a close around 225$ would drive probability of an imminent bear market to near certainty. If there is a bounce this time it is going to be weak.

Originally, Robinhood planned to make money off of order flows ? a common tactic used by discount brokerages in the 1990s to generate revenue. According to the company's FAQ, Robinhood backpedaled on the idea because it executes orders through a clearing partner and, as a result, receives little to no payment for order flow. The company is willing to return to its original plan in the future if it receives order flows directly or begins to generate a lot of revenue from them.

They have a RobinHood Gold subscription, and make money from interest in cash deposited but not invested in their accounts, as well as money on their margin service

fish
2017-11-14 16:30
@stolzlos Can you explain that technical analysis you've done there?

stolzlos
2017-11-15 01:50
@fish nothing special really. I look for a line of resistance which I hope will eventually break. You draw a line through the top prices (or touches) and establish the line. the more touches you have, the better. I generally like to see 3 touches. You start buying when price breaks the line.

stolzlos
2017-11-15 01:51
If after a breakout price falls back and closes below the line I close the position at a loss, unconditionally. If it rallies afterwards, bad luck.

stolzlos
2017-11-15 01:56
Further, I favor setups where a breakout has a good chance in getting new highs. These are generally the most profitable.

stolzlos
2017-11-15 03:27
a more extreme example

stolzlos
2017-11-15 03:31
I started buying that one around 2.05. The line is not perfect but it has lots of touches. The other problem is that it is much more slanted and retests (which are common) mean lower prices than where you bought for the resistance line is falling. See Gold futures (last 6 months) for a prime example of that pesky market behavior. Keeps me and @harvie quite itchy.

stolzlos
2017-11-15 03:33
Further, after buying price fell even below the line but it never closed below and luckily started moving up afterwards.

@stolzlos Thank you for the in depth explanation. One of the coins I invest in short term (and hopefully out any second now) is going to do that in 3 days. stolzlos
2018-02-04 09:54
time to panic? Volatility is breaking out.

stolzlos
2018-02-04 09:58
The Volatility Index goes back to 1993 yet only just recently it broke its historic record on the low side. A 25 year timespan. This means peak complacency and that means nobody gives a damn anymore. Absolutely nobody expects stocks to come back down or even stop advancing.

stolzlos
2018-02-04 10:01
I further checked the volatility of the S&P 500 against which the VIX is traded and it turns out that 1993/94 was the calmest time on record, going back to 1971!

stolzlos
2018-02-04 10:04
And that means that we witnessed the lowest traded volatility in almost 50 years on record and most probably (no proof) the lowest since the crash of '29.

stolzlos
2018-02-04 10:10
From 1993 we had the tech boom and stocks tripled. A replay would mean that stocks triple from here. With all the money printing that is not impossible in my opinion. Of course it is batshit crazy.

stolzlos
2018-02-04 10:15
The two arguments against an epic bullmarket are Gold and Bonds. Gold is creeping higher and Bonds are breaking down.

stolzlos

And in regard to PMs, yes. That will be the next great bull market after gold manages to clear 1360 solidly. Dollar has a final comeback but looking at the charts the dollar and gold start their next huge move in earnest within the next 3-6 months. So loading up on more PM stocks is the way to go.

jase

yes, I just checked the chart back to 2004. If it clears 60$ it should challenge its all time highs at 140$ in the years to come without much struggle. 60$ is the big deal. I will keep an eye on it.

jase
2018-02-11 18:13
HK land holdings could be a good opportunity, but yield isn't too high yet

mikeseo
2018-02-12 01:04
so a 5% Singapore REIT = 7% yield in US minus the 30% withholding tax 6% Singapore = 8.5% US

mikeseo
2018-02-12 01:07
when government interest rates rise, the REITs and other dividend stocks should go down in price right? Because people would rather have the safety of government debt as long as the yield is decent?

mikeseo
2018-02-12 01:08
and also when rates rise, inflation can happen, so long term capital gains stocks might go up in price? Because cash is worth less and things are worth more?

jase
2018-02-12 11:08
This probably assumes the company stays constant. Take First REIT for example, a few years back it was a young company/unproven. Now it is established. I wouldn't expect valuation to drop to "unproven days" based on bond yields increasing

ya lot's of moving pieces. I was just thinking IF Singapore gov bonds eventually get up to 5-6%, why would anyone want to buy a Singapore REIT that pays the same?

jase
2018-02-12 15:55
Again I guess it depends if they are buying it for income or total return. TR of a REIT paying a 5% dividend may be 8% in a year, while a SSB paying 5% is only going to ever return 5%

you think just higher interest rates will cause a massive switch or does there need to be some kind of crisis too? I wonder how a 10% dividend stock will be affected by 3-4% Treasurys. Might be time to sell 4-6% dividend stocks at least?

stolzlos
2018-05-18 12:21
@mikeseo it depends how quickly interest rates change. A sudden spike to 4% for example would motivate a lot of people to switch to bonds. Not only for the yield but because debt funding would cause earnings/growth to shrink which is obviously not good for dividends and hence stock valuations. A crisis of some kind would be a trigger an accelerated rise in yields.

stolzlos
2018-05-18 12:22
Since there is a huge difference between a 10% dividend and 3-4% interest rate I would not expect much effect, except the company has a high debt/equity ratio. See above.

stolzlos
2018-05-18 12:25
regarding selling or not, depends on the company, sector and location. A company like Rio Tinto for example with a yield of 6% you don't want to sell. There is no general answer unfortunately.

@stolzlos hmm so you're saying that a company's cost to borrow money will go up with rising rates, so their profits will go down, which will make their stock price go down? And are you saying for example to hold Rio Tinto because they aren't borrowing a lot so they're not as sensitive to rising rates? Or because it's a mining company and commodities will do good with inflation and rising rates?

stolzlos
2018-05-22 07:08
on the first, yes.

stolzlos
2018-05-22 07:13
on the second, I don't know their debt ratio so I won't comment on that (it could be though and then you would be right of course).

stolzlos
2018-05-22 07:13
But commodities are in an uptrend which means inflation is here or coming and generally rates are only following (or late) generally.

stolzlos
2018-05-22 07:14
That means that resource related companies have a positive spread between revenue increases and increases in rates. I assume that is why they do so well in such times.

Myself, I trade everything bust mainly macro sensitive instruments - so as for metals I prefer to trade GC rather than SI. I can't remember when I looked at SI chart for the last time before you posted it.

Yes, me too, spreads are really nice in CFDs these days, in particular if you like to trade DAX and dont mind trading on a "virtual" market.

in regard to the chart, I use a lot of them and I do that because sometimes you see something one one chart that is hidden on others. It builds and shapes my world view by looking at them.

ivo

I couldn't agree more - always strikes me how everything changes when I am forced to look at a clean chart.

to be a bit poetic, for me a chart represents the unadulterated truth of present and past reality

@stolzlos Difficult and complex, yes. But frankly, I don't think you can trade any instrument without using macro analysis. Technical analysis may help you understand when an asset is cheap and/or expensive but trends don't evolve due to some MACD crossover or whatever but because of how we move on in the cycles.

stolzlos
2018-07-02 16:02
It is so interesting how very personal trading is. I would never ever be able to trade using macro analysis. But I absolutely believe you that it works for you.

stolzlos
2018-07-02 16:05
And even though I am technically a TA trader because I only use charts I use basically nothing but trendlines. No indicators. I never trade any of these countless mostly useless pattern.

ivo
2018-07-02 17:25
The problem is that technical analysis is non-directional. You will always be able to find a reason to be long or short, it's just a matter of timeframes. TA is nothing but a backtest of a sample size of prices. Macro-analysis is also not much more directional, simply because there is always two sides of a coin. However, sometimes you find divergences that don't make any sense. That's what I look for: For example that ridiculous rally in the DAX after Draghi announced two weeks ago that they are going to stop extending QE. Okay, maybe he could have said more but at the end of the day the ECB is pulling liquidity out of the markets and Equities rally? That's where I like to look for entries into swing trades. I think there is a big problem in the retail sphere, because most traders think they can outsmart complex algo trading systems by drawing a few lines on a price chart matters, while they'd better off learning how interest rates work - something you find rarely in joe trader's playbook.

ivo
2018-07-02 17:28
But then again, that's a pretty idealistic way of my personal trade style, since I am actually using a lot of TA for trade entries. However, I don't like to use any time sensitive indicators or drawings. At the end, all I do is draw horiuzontal lines and use Fibs. I've never found to need anything else.

stolzlos
2018-07-02 18:00
I completely get what you are saying and I totally agree. TA is not perfect and by itself it is imho actually pretty useless unless you have a specific application for it like for example to get into a trade as you do. For the most part it is just another slick method to turn Retail into suckers and separate them from their hard earned cash.

mikeseo
2018-08-08 04:36
is it risky holding everything in 1 broker? I'm thinking 80% in IB, 10% in Boom, and maybe 10% in Saxo. Boom has some Asian markets that IB doesnt have. I think Saxo might have more EU markets than IB but I haven't tried them yet. IB does not have Norway, so far my only complaint. US market trades are $1 on IB and $20 on Boom. Plus with IB you have much more control over FX instead of just having the broker do the conversion for you and skim off the top.

This is true, I looked and I can get rid of my bank owned brokerage accounts. But not Boom.

hi all, does anyone know where to find information on whether trading within a foreign incorporated company would be considered foreign sourced income? it looks to be possible in jurisdictions such as hong kong "Profits from the purchase and sale of listed shares and other listed securities Taxable if the stock exchange where the shares or securities in question are traded is located in Hong Kong Where the purchase and sale took place over-the-counter, taxable where the contracts of purchase and sale are effected in Hong Kong" https://www.ird.gov.hk/eng/paf/bus_pft_tsp.htm While in Panama one site writes "The only income which is taxed is the one derived from within Panama. The sale of products or services to people, entities, or companies in Panama are considered as Panama source income and taxed. The sales of products or services to persons, entities, or companies located outside of Panama are not taxed." http://atsa-panama.com/eng/taxes.html Does anyone know of a tax lawyer who could clarify this for somewhere like Panama, which has no CFC laws?

Can anyone provide advice on travelling and trading, mainly from a laptop? I've getting close to developing my trading plan and hopefully about to get on the move but I'm wondering how to go about it. Would a VPS be recommended? I'm using NinjaTrader8 as my platform on a Windows laptop. I was about to buy a new laptop (I have an older Dell Inspiron 17R, CPU feeling slow now days :disappointed: ) but am now wondering if I should put that money towards a VPS and trading from that. For now, all my strategies will be unautomated, mainly thinking of using it quicker connection to broker, redundancy (if my laptop gets stolen for example I can use a friends temporarily etc). And unless I'm missing something is there anything special about these "Forex VPS"'? Or any old VPS with adequate storage, CPU, RAM etc will do?

vinodgn0088
2019-02-13 02:12
@burrup.lambert, If you want low latency to trading platform and option to keep the trade open for long term its better to get a VPS. But don't get some cheap oversell VPS. I suggest a 2 to 4 Core ( 2.6GHz or more clock speed per core) , 4GB RAM and a location closest to your trading platform's server. Also, make sure you get a VPS with SSD or NVMe disk space.

burrup.lambert
2019-02-13 02:17
Thanks @vinodgn0088. Would you recommend one even for someone who is not using automation? For a new laptop I was looking at a Dell XPS 15, a newer model that is M.2 NVMe capable with PCI 4x Lane (most only have 2x so not getting full speed), the Dell XPS 13 9370 and above have 4x speed but I think the screen size would be too small. I'm on a 17" screen atm but the screen itself is crap, terrible battery life and its heavy as shit!

vinodgn0088
2019-02-13 03:26
@burrup.lambert, You can try Amazon EC2 with NVMe storage. If you go for 17" screen chances of getting good battery life is difficult.

ivo
2019-02-13 09:18
@burrup.lambert latency trader here: you only need a VPS if you are planning to use automated strategies. There is no benefit when you are using market orders because the click interaction between your home computer and the VPS is essentially the same when using no VPS, and limit orders will sit on the broker?s or exchange?s servers anyways. Forex VPS have the benefit of usually being co-located in NY5 or LD5, the Equinix server structure where most brokers are hosted. That matters if you are in trading fast markets or low liquidity, exchange traded instruments. If you are just getting started and trade manually, I would invest in a better Laptop every day before buying a server. Especially since if you are planning to trade from charts. My experience is that the most important things for a trading computer are: non-glaring high res screens, battery life, RAM and an Ethernet plug.

If you want to go all out on tracking expenses my guess if you'll find Xero the best option

Found this one: https://www.oldschoolvalue.com/blog/investment-tools/the-best-free-stock-portfolio-tracking-spreadsheet It's a modified one from the below link. Guy modified it to suit US exchanges, OTC pink sheets etc. http://www.investmentmoats.com/StockPortfolioTracker/stockportfolioinvestmenttracker.php The original one you can see the guy just uses a different spreadsheet for different currency holdings. If I get time might have a play with it (still Google spreadsheets though ><).

Gave this a go. It's actually quite good @johncitizen @jase. It's designed for Australia, NZ, Canada, UK, Global/US residents. You can have multiple portfolios and each portfolio has it's own tax residency. It auto detects dividend payments, you just have to confirm there. It integrates with Xero personal which I don't use (yet). You can also automatically add investments via email that contains the contract note. They have a pretty big list of brokers. For example I use SelfWealth (no need for full service brokers atm), when SelfWealth emails me the contract note it automatically sends it to my Sharesight inbox and it is added to my portfolio. It also supports multiple currencies, you can use the exchange rate on the day (that Sharesight specifies) or input your own exchange rate. One annoying thing about SelfWealth is that the Contract Note doesn't include the brokerage fee, it's sent as a different invoice. So although the holding is automatically added you still have to go in manually and just add in the fee in Sharesight. It doesn't support Interactive Brokers yet (but I read it's in the works, last updated 1 month ago) so atm have to input those trades manually with currency etc. Doesn't do KRX (Korea) but I can live with that. Free version does everything I need it seems except it only tracks 10 holdings (including closed positions)! All in all pretty good, I'd recommended people give it a go.

@jerrycjchang Yes, single stocks. It is not that I like trading Cannabis stocks in particular but they are a new asset class just like cryptos or blockchain stocks. And since it is a new one it moves pretty powerful *if/when* it moves. So more vol, hence better risk/reward.

Hi all. I've finally decided to pull my thumb out and start a blog, which as it turns out will be about Forex (for now) and my journey to being a consistently profitable trader. You can find it here > https://www.burruplambert.com/ It's all still a work in progress sorry. But if you wait for something to be 'perfect' you will NEVER launch it, whether it's a product, website, strategy etc. The purpose of this is not to get any subscribers though if you want to see something like this feel free to. The main purpose is to hold myself accountable to doing the work and delivering the content and it helps when you announce to the world (or Slack ) your intentions. Telling everyone publicly you are going to do something is a great way to motivate yourself. If anyone has any feedback I would love to hear it. Writing is definitely a skill I want to improve.

ivan

2019-08-02 11:53
Hey, good luck. As from someone who?s been trading FX for 7 years now, I believe you put yourself under a lot of pressure by trying to force yourself into consistency. I?ve done the same mistake when I started and ended up extremely frustrated when things did not work out as I wanted. The first years are best spent by trying to understand how markets work and not screw up entirely. FX as a market is extremely complex because it?s the underlying market for basically all other markets. That means, you have to look at cross-asset relationships to get a better understanding of what the FX market is doing, *esp the Bond market* (which retail trader often seem to forget exists).

burrup.lambert
2019-08-02 12:26
Thanks for the advice. I wouldn't say I am "forcing" myself however. Everyone works best under certain circumstances. For me, I like to have a tangible date to work towards. Even if I don't achieve it I would accomplish more than if I didn't have any date set at all. I certainly don't expect to be living off trading by the 14th of Jan 2020 :slightly_smiling_face:. Do you trade full time? Only Forex? Swing trading? Algo/manual?

ivo
2019-08-04 09:06
@burrup.lambert I was a full time trader for 5 years. My focus was on event-driven arbitrage strategies, mainly in the FX markets and news trading in FX and Futures. Most of the Arb strategies were extremely short-term (a few second ), while news trades could range from seconds to several days. I took a break from full-time trading last year, a) because of getting burned out by doing the same thing for 5 years and b) the ESMA regulations basically killed the retail FX market in the EU and would have forced much of my business offshore. I still do newstrading, but almost exclusively in CL now (alongside with a few other ?exotic? events).

burrup.lambert

A few of us https://www.sharesight.com , it converts the exchange rate, support every exchange I have stocks on so far (except KRX, though you can add custom holdings) and it has CGT reporting tools, you can set your portfolio tax setting to any of the 5 Eyes countries. I'm not sure how much help it will be outside that but worth signing up for free and trying it out.

clr

I find Kraken good for SEPA transfer. However, note that TransferWise don?t want anything to do with crypto so it might be an issue. I have never attempted to transfer between a exchange and TW, so I don?t know. See the last paragraph here: https://transferwise.com/help/11/getting-started/2932118/incompatible-accounts-currencies

Hi, read the Forex guide. Years ago I tried daytrading with stocks, ETF. For almost 2 years most part of it on paper money. I never got to a point where I trusted the systems, and never got close to feel the results(good or bad) were not random and luck. Plus when I put some dollars, I experience the anguish mentioned in the guide. I should be solid, consistent for a while to not feel I am being fooled by randomness. But making some money trading would be great. Could you point me in a direction where to have a look how you are doing it please? Thanks

I?d say not many markets are expected to grow the same way as Cannabis market. With first companies hitting IPOs with arguably overvalued original valuations, attracting lot?s of attention and fear of missing out stock buy. With original cannabis bubble deflated now, it is time to spot few companies which have a proven money making engine within. Those would likely to go to the moon in 1-2 years from now in my view.

*Wanted to ask those fellow traders out there? I?m a trader based out in Asia and have a tax residency in a low tax jurisdiction.* A question to those who use companies to trade? What are the reasons you have setup a company to trade vs your personal name? Is it mainly tax?  I am trying to understand if it is worth having an entity to trade (depending on your personal circumstances of course.).

I haven't used a trading company but I can think of a reason - if someone is trading with high leverage then LLC could limit his liability if things go very bad and losses are bigger than account deposit

A company is useful for separating commercial activities from personal activities. Also, limits the liability siloing the risk. One last thing, company tax residency may be different to that of the owner.

Volatility is crap because it triggers stop-loss when it shouldn't. I recently changed of Forex broker, and I think I'm seeing broader spread than before. Not sure if it is because of the broker or the nowadays situation. I use an ECN broker to minimize spreads, but it counts when you are in minute or subminute charts.

Hello, I am a new member and FX trader. I already have a personal account in SWISSQUOTE. I would like to open a business account in SWISSQUOTE in the near future. Where should I set up a company best? Best regards,

simon
2020-06-16 18:03
@fujimoto.fjc Estonia is usually a good option for trading, as profits aren?t subject to tax until distributed (and you can pay yourself a salary tax-free so there is no need to ever distribute profits). Obviously, you?ll have to be careful regarding how such a structure would be taxed in your country of tax residency. From your username, I assume Japan? If so, the tax treaty in place with Estonia states that profits generated in Japan (you trading while physically in Japan) are liable to tax only in Japan while profits generated elsewhere will be liable to tax only in Estonia (provided that there is no other PE). https://www.mofa.go.jp/files/000285159.pdf

@simon Thank you for your prompt reply. I have thought Estonia company needs to file a tax return even if no taxes. Is it correct? If it can, I hope the scheme is maintenance-free and low cost. Yes, I am Japanese living in Japan and not very good at English. If my message is not polite, I say I am sorry in advance. And I have a plan that I use Trust or Foundation for holding the company in order to avoid CFC rules.?What are your thoughts on this?

simon
2020-06-17 07:15
@fujimoto.fjc That is correct, although the return only needs to be filed once a year and it can be done electronically (on the government website). There is no government fees to pay in Estonia once a company is registered (the government fee for registration is a little under 200 EUR). You need to pay for an address there for the company but there are providers offering them for as little as 100-150 EUR annually. Overall it's a very cost-efficient structure, with great tax benefits. As for the Trust / Foundation, would that be registered in Japan or offshore?

fujimoto.fjc
2020-06-17 12:31
@simon Thank you very much for the valuable information about an Estonia company. It would be easy and low cost to maintain a company. I plan to set up Trust or Foundation in offshore. And I am also thinking about the scheme of PTC: Private Trust Company in offshore. I attached the information. I think PTC may work well as an FX trading company for tax purposes. I am researching a lot of options to reduce taxes for FX trading now. By the way, I read your blog and decided to join the insiders club because you are an FX trader too. I also contacted Fidelity overseas as same as you. because Belize IBC is a low cost. Best regards,

simon
2020-06-17 22:10
Reading Japan?s CFC rules, it seems that it would be very difficult to exclude passive income received by a BVI (or similar) entity. https://taxsummaries.pwc.com/japan/corporate/group-taxation

simon
2020-06-17 22:13
That is also assuming that the income would be deemed passive. I guess that would depend on how often you trade / how long your positions stay open. If the income is deemed active, it will likely be deemed Japanese-sourced if you trade while physically in Japan (resulting in the creating of a Japanese permanent establishment and corporate taxation).

@simon Thank you for your comments. I am a swing trader. I guess below. If I adopt a scheme of PTC: 1. Shareholders of PTC are third party (=Trust company there) due to purpose trust between me and Trust company. I am not seen as a shareholder of PTC. Therefore I am not applied by CFC rules. 2. I trade FX as a director or officer of PTC while living in Japan. As you mentioned, I may be regarded as PE. But I have no income and PTC has no income too by that trading. Trust itself has that income. This Trust is another trust above and is between me and PTC. I entrusted my money to PTC before. This trust does not have to pay taxes by offshore tax rules. I am not yet convinced whether this logic above is correct or not in Japan. I am continuing to research schemes. I have a lot of time because of a swing trader. By the way, I will pay taxes this year in Japan. Next year I am going to conduct an offshore scheme. Best regards,

enimos

> The biggest difference is their distribution policy. CSPX is accumulating while VUSA is distributing. Both are from different providers iShares vs. Vanguard so they will track the same index differently (likely that difference is going to be marginal and harder to notice for most investor). Also the fund sizes are different (CSPX is bigger).

Is it legal for a UK LLP to use profits to invest them in securities or crypto? By that I mean instead of taking dividends / salary, can you just put those profits straight in investments on the company's behalf ? Is there any threshold ? It might be a dumb question

buynps.org
2021-01-05 03:26
@guillaume.hucheloup what?s the advantage in doing that?

guillaume.hucheloup
2021-01-05 14:50
@buynps.org I am a Thailand tax resident with a UK LLP. So all my foreign income profits that are not remitted within the same calendar year are tax free. But now, if I do remit profit tax free on my personal account the next calendar year and trade with them, I would still get capital gains tax / crypto gains tax to pay on a personal level. My thought process, and it can be blank wrong, is that if I don't remit profits and trade with it on the company's behalf to generate more profit, I wouldn't have to pay capital gains tax on that as long as I keep them for a year. But I don't know how the UK LLP would be taxed on profits from trading, where, and if it is even legal to do so. @simon any input? I know it might sounds really blurry..

I just had a chat with IB support and asked them about fees. They said that personal and corporate are the same. I told them that I heard somebody gets charged 200$ a month. Support said that this is not possible. Did you talk to support?

donatobianchi
2021-01-06 09:23
I verified with IB and I can confirm they do not charge. It may be possible to charge 10 usd if the account is inactive. Tradezero is charging 200 USD for the platform. I was thinking to do scalping with a broker, so tradezero suits more for the type of training like this.

any ways to buy crypto with TransferWise?

simon
2021-01-07 01:26
@guillaume.hucheloup It?s perfectly legal in the UK to trade using your LLP but do note that dividends received from UK companies, interests from UK banks etc will have to be reported in the UK (and will likely be taxed, unless exempt by a treaty).

emilianod76

@d.mikocionis I tried to transfer some money to http://Crypto.com from my Transferwise account and yesterday the transfer was cancelled. Long story short : you can't from Transferwise.

emilianod76
2021-01-07 11:47
This is the response I received: I am getting in touch to inform you that we are unfortunately unable to proceed with your transfer as the purpose for it goes against our Acceptable Use Policy section 1.2.2.c- According to which we do not support payments related to Cryptocurrencies. If you read section 1.2.2.c of our Acceptable Use Policy you will notice the following statement, "Companies involved in the exchange or trading of cryptocurrencies, or any other virtual currencies. *Including payments for the purpose of purchasing cryptocurrencies.*" Please note that based on our Acceptable Use Policy, your TransferWise account is not to be used to facilitate the purchase of cryptocurrencies. We cannot support transfers to Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency, directly or indirectly, through our services. You can read more about our Acceptable Use Policy here: https://transferwise.com/acceptable-use-policy-eea We've cancelled the transfer and returned the money back to the originating account. Thank you for your understanding regarding this matter.

@simon does an LLC have the same reporting requirement for interest (dividends) received in the US?

simon
2021-01-07 14:01
@stolzlos If it?s a disregarded entity, no. Withholding tax is automatically applied by the company paying the dividend (they know the correct rate thanks to your W8 form).

ambroise.debret
2021-01-09 11:42
Ok so if the trading plaform is baseed outsite UK and no investment is made in UK companies, no taxes?

guillaume.hucheloup
2021-01-09 12:49
My thoughts exactly @ambroise.debret Here is an example : Thai fiscal resident with UK LLP. UK LLP invoices 10.000 USD to an Israel Based company The LLP invests this 10.000 USD to trade on a non UK platform. Let's say Crypto on a Asia platform. LLP trades and makes 10.000 USD profit Total now 20.000 USD. 20.000 USD remitted the next calendar year in Personal Account in Thailand. 20.000 tax free ? @simon? What would happen with the 10000 USD gains ? Would they be taxed or not, and where ?

simon
2021-01-09 12:56
The capital gains may be taxed somewhere, depending on the types of investments (real estate gains, for example, are often liable to tax in the countries where the properties are located) but if no work was performed while in Thailand / remittance rules were respected, I don?t see any liability there (or in the UK).

mescos
2021-02-28 15:01
@jase and @simon do you know if opening with Interactive Brokers UK (as an example) would expose you to US estate tax if you were to die while holding over 60k in the account? In other words, isn?t the account still technically domiciled in the US even though it?s opened with a different IBKR branch? If so, that would seem like a major downside of opening with them.

simon

US estate tax applies to US assets, no matter where your broker is located. If you hold US stocks, they?ll likely be liable to US estate tax.

I heard/read several times 90% of daytraders loose money. I tried it for more than a year and didn?t work for me. But maybe it was that I was not understanding the environment. I guess in this super bullish crypto market as long as it lasts if you day trade long the odds are more in your favor, but also in buy and hold in bullish market you would do well too. I believe odds are very against you, you must invest time everyday, in education, equipment, software, memberships while competing with algos/bots/computers, to investors with way more resources than the average man, slippages.... Plus, let?s say you put 100k account, and you do good over 10 years time at 20% gains, that?s 20k per year(before taxes). But I am not expert, just sharing my experience. Though every now and then I do it for fun with amounts I am more than ok loosing. I believe best thing is to buy and hold, or do value investing. How much did Buffet/Soros made yearly averaging all their carrers? I believe around 20%.

My understanding is that in day trading you're mostly competing with AI (automated algorithms that are able to place orders within milliseconds) + stacking up fees with the # of transactions, so only a very small % of traders with a unique strategy succeed. On the other hand, the value investors with mid-term goals seem to report a higher success rate, but I have no idea which time frame of investors have the higher success rate or higher profits. Only thing for sure is that Warren B. wasn't a day trader.

td
2021-04-08 13:24
i trade on H1+ Timeframes, not competing with any HFT, and i do more casual trading like every few days, but over the last nearly 10 years its around 3% per month on return, i have also some expert advisors running, who trade even less, simple algos like trend following and based on indicators like avarage true range i detect market anomalies which is also sucessful for me, but even though i have some content in that area, 60-80% of the private traders lose money + its not really useful and has no added value, so i would only recommend it to a very special kind of personality who can emotionally cope with all the challenges. the nice thing about it, is that you can also profit from bear markets + you have a leverage on your capital, so with a good strategy and some play money just try to profit from some big events, research breaktout-strategy and news short term, research newstrading especially trade market corrections, and mid term research about trend following strategie, like the good old turtle traders, but dont buy any strategys  in information efficient markets no public strategy ever works

Dear Client, While many of our clients actively trade or maintain substantial equity in their account, we have decided to eliminate our monthly inactivity fee so there are no impediments to maintaining an account with IBKR. Effective July 1, 2021, you will no longer be charged USD 10 for not maintaining a minimum balance or transaction activity for account U****. be aware that US have some kind of extra tax for non-residents for stocks/dividends etc. (I'm not an expert), so if you are non-US resident you may want to look into same ETFs, but domiciled in Ireland. boggleheads forum mat have some info on that matter

simon
2021-07-27 17:16
ETFs domiciled in Ireland benefit from the Ireland-US tax treaty and its lower withholding tax rate on dividends received from US based companies. It can make sense to use such ETFs if you receive significant dividends income from US companies and reside in a country with no US tax treaty (or a worse rate than Ireland?s).

mikeseo
2021-07-27 19:20
seems most US listed stocks have dividend withholding tax if you're not a US resident. Some shipping companies listed in the US are incorporated in tax havens and don't withhold any of the dividend

SG HK UK stocks = no div withholding tax

simon
2021-07-28 16:43
To clarify, withholding tax is paid by the company paying out the dividends, in its country of tax residency. For example, if you invest in a US-based company the dividends you receive will be liable to US withholding tax no matter where you are based / where your broker is based. If you invest in a UK company, on the other hand, the dividends you receive will not be liable to withholding tax no matter where you are / where your broker is as the UK doesn?t have a withholding tax.

marziovit

@simon can?t withholding taxes be reduced by using double taxation agreements?

Yes, if you reside in a country with a favourable treaty (or if the entity receiving the dividends is a tax resident of such a country).
