So far I have looked at Cigna, Bupa, Aetna and Integra. Cigna is the clear winner, decent coverage, cheapest, direct billing and covers you for 6 months back in your home country. Aetna and Integra were wayyyy expensive. Bupa I couldn't even get an online quote I had to call up blah blah, not worth my time so I have immediately dismissed them.

I have not actually looked much more into it since that post! I will however say I was perhaps incorrect when I said Cigna was the clear winner as I realised I wasn't quite comparing apples to apples. I didn't realise Cigna Outpatient cover was an extra add on where with the others they are included which is why Cigna was so cheap when I was looking at it. That said, Cigna might still be the winner but I need to go back and double check every thing.
I have learnt though to just fill out the online quote stuff with bogus details, email, mobile etc otherwise you will get someone contacting/pestering you like I did from Cigna. Though it wasn't all bad, that was where I found out they cover you for 6 months in your home country and direct bill.
Indeed it is annoying Bupa does not provide an online quote. Perhaps once I have settled on a policy I will contact them last to see how they compare.

For my own personal circumstances I do not care about Dental (teeth are in good nick + I'd rather fly to Asia for Dental work at a fraction of the cost). Medical Emergency Evac is a must, you never know where you will be and how far the closest hospital is.

I went with AETNA in the end. Bizarrely, as soon as I asked to pay in GBP the price shot down to GBP2100! Triple checked with a manager if this was a mistake and they said it wasn't...so always be sure to ask about the currency options before buying! I'm now covered worldwide (but only emergency coverage in USA), zero deductibles, dental and have direct pay so I don't have to pay then claim for outpatient stuff or prescriptions. Glorious.

Hi, I just read the health guide.
As a location independent person, when you buy Integra/allianz/Cigna. How it is decided where you are going ?to be shipped? in case of accident while traveling abroad from home country or country you are registered?
And in case of long term illness treatment(HIV etc) where you will have to do the treatment? Globally(randomly), home country or the country you are registered?
For example, i was born in South America, got EU passport, but will be registered in another EU country.

Hi all, so far during the last years I?ve been traveling with the private healthcare of my country and with a travel insurance(World Nomads).
I had to pay for some consults to doctors and for routine exams while abroad as World Nomads as a travel insurance don?t cover this expenses.
Recently I moved residence to Europe, so I asked for some quotes in Cigna, which I found expensive. So I am considering paying the private healthcare plan in my home country, continue to pay for a travel insurance(maybe better than WN) and also rely on my European EU health care system where I am resident.
This is half the price compared to Cigna, the only drawback is that I may have to choose where to be treated, in my home country or in my european residency country.
Any advices?

@gun I know people with second passports and jobs in other countries who have been refused a flight out. Makes you wonder how valuable a second passport is as an 'insurance' policy if the country is to fail.
One person I know got out as his work is 'essential' (doctor) and I've heard of people getting out if they're media or journalists but not sure if that's true.

I've heard it's possible, but unlikely. There was a public story in The Guardian this week about someone trying to leave Australia permanently with his family on UK passports so they could be with their elderly family members in the UK.
They were denied an exit exemption until he mentioned he was also going to work as a doctor.

Not allowing someone to leave (especially on a 2nd passport) is one of the worst invasions of personal rights I've ever seen.

Btw, my understanding with Safety Wings, is that it's not a full blown health insurance, but only for designated travelling/destinations. I currently got an offer from https://www.oominsurance.com/going-abroad/oom-living-abroad-insurance/ it's a health insurance for max 2 years. You can then apply for another 2 years. There's no permanency, so you can stop any day and get a restitution.

I'm currently thinking about switching to the Allianz Worldwide Care global health insurance, does somebody here have real-life experience with them?
I've checked some review sites and a lot of the comments there sound quite frustrated with it, at the same time I think that probably only the people with negative experiences are going there to comment, so I'm not putting too much value into these reviews...

I have had insurance with them for the last three years. Haven?t made any claim so far, so I cannot comment on how efficient they are reimbursing claims.
On the other hand, recently I changed my address, and they quoted me a price in USD, but later it turned out the amount was in EUR instead (so the price was quite higher). All I got for an answer was along the lines of ?sorry, it should have read EUR instead of USD? as if it didn?t make any difference. In general, my impression is that they seem a large organization and somewhat bureaucratic, where if something goes wrong nobody takes responsibility. The good part of being large is that they are not going to disappear.
I am keeping them because I haven?t found any better option so far. I have looked into the Safety Wing insurance (the full insurance option, not the travel insurance) and the price is almost the same, but coverage seems to have more exclusions and higher deductibles.

And what health insurance were you paying, where? If you have a private health insurance on top of your public health insurance, I can see that perhaps as unnecessary. Unless you're trying to cover something extra, that the public health insurance doesn't currently cover. Or if you plan to get (extra) coverage outside the EU, when traveling abroad.

AS EU citizen you do have EU insurance. When something happens abroad, you just sign a paper that you did not travel purely for medical purposes and you should get same treatment as native person.
I has accident in Germany, paid only like 10EUR for doctors visit, and ended up having operation in Germany. I may have ended up paying some 80EUR copay for the clinic, but I am not sure.
I even get same insurance dotation for dental work done in Germany as if I were Germany insured.
Yeah, EU citizen traveling in EU, you can go 'naked' and just hope they can take care of you:)

@omocha_10 I think as for people in Spain 'it depends'. If you're not self-employed and not employed, I don't think you'll have public insurance, given you don't pay social security. In that case you either pay out of pocket for each visit or take out a private insurance.
Also I can image people taking out private health insurance in Spain, to have the freedom to choose a (better) clinic or hospital.

In Thailand there are local options too, such as Aetna ( was previously called Bupa ), the advantage of it is mostly that it is sure to be recognized by any of the private hospitals that are considered some of the best in the world.

Was remembering one situation when I arrived in DPS and on all TVs at the immigration counters it shows trailers that the Indo govt. is cracking down on bribery. Right before the counters a policeman came to me and ask if I want to have the ?speed lane? aka the lane for pilots to get through immigration quickly if I would be willing to give him some money?

A friend of mine overstayed for 32 days (by accident) and his fine was originally $4k, but he went to a Visa agent who told him when to go to which counter to leave the country because he had a friend there and he ?just? needed to pay them $1.5k. All worked fine and he is not blacklisted or anything?

I am not part of my home country's system (in Europe) so I cannot get it there. It's not available in the country where I live (in Asia) either. I checked with private hospitals in Dubai but according to the ones I have received replies from, I need to establish residency there first which is not something I am interested in.
Any hospital or country somewhere offering covid vaccines for a payment? Preferably the one from BioNTech/Pfizer or Moderna.

April International has something like that. Compared a while ago insurances and they were doing good for the basics. If you want to get more holistic coverage, there are other providers who have wider coverage and are cheaper. April MyHealth has cancer coverage, etc.

I got the vaccine months ago. They didn?t give me any paper or covid passport. When I tried to get one, I had to do an E-digital identity, through an IRS related website.
Now I?m in Lithuania, on a random walk saw some vaccine and testing stations, asked if I can get a test, they say I need to register on a website.

Last year I discover the Latvia health system for non residents/tourists.
Did general tests and came back this year.
Very good facilities/professionals and great prices.
A consultation with a Dr 35 euros and a thirough blood and urine test 60 euros.
Doing this in the past in Hungary, Lithuania, Estonia, Portugal.... always around 400, so 60 was a steal.
No cue, no waiting, results by email with password very fast.
The only not so good thing is that you need to book a fee weeks before.
But I really recommend it.
